Samajwadi Party leader and Member of Parliament Azam
Khan apologized in the Lok Sabha yesterday for the
comments he had made last week.
Azam Khan’s sexist remarks about Lok Sabha Deputy Speaker and BJP MP
Rama Devi had created a huge controversy and several female
Members of Parliament had called for action against him.
Rama Devi had said Khan has no right to stay in Lok Sabha and other MPs such
as Smriti Irani, Nirmala Sitharaman and Mimi Chakraborty
supported her stand. Azam Khan had made the sexist remarks during a debate on
a bill to ban Triple Talaq when Rama Devi had asked Azam Khan to speak while
looking at the Chair and address the House through the presiding officer.
The statements were found to be massively offensive and were immediately
expunged from the house records. However, at the time Azam Khan did not
apologies and said he will resign if he had said anything unparliamentarily.
He also staged a walkout and was supported by his party chief
Akhilesh Yadav.
Rama Devi refused to accept the apology and had said,”If Azam Khan had
apologized for his indecent statement on the same day, I would have forgiven
him. He even walked off on Thursday after making this comment – adding insult
to injury.”
The comments received widespread criticism from all corners and many people
demanded a suitable punishment for Azam Khan who is known for making
offensive comments against women.
Lyricist and poet Javed Akhtar tweeted, “I believe that Mr
Azam khan’ s words to the MP sitting in the speaker ‘s chair are totally
unacceptable . they were uncultured indecent and lecherous . It is the
responsibility of the hon speaker of the house to teach him a lesson that he
will not be able to forget.”
