A closed door meeting was held yesterday by the United Nations
Security Council to discuss the recent steps taken by Indian
government in regards to special status of Jammu and
Kashmir.
India’s decision to revoke Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir did not go down
well with Pakistan who has been interfering with the peace
of the state for decades. Pakistan with the support of its ally
China had asked the United Nations Security Council for a
“closed consultations” on the issue.
The meeting that was held yesterday was attended by the five permanent
members and 10 non-permanent members and did not include Pakistan and India.
Before the meeting deputy permanent representative of Russia, Dimitry
Polyanskiy said, “That’s what closed consultations are for. What
does Russia think the next step should be- we favour bilateral track between
India and Pakistan. You know our position. It hasn’t changed. Today, we have
closed consultations and we will just exchange opinions and see what we can
do and what we cannot do. It is a normal process.”
As per reports, the results of the meeting will not be made public in a
formal manner as the consultations were informal in nature.
India’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the UN Security,
Syed Akbaruddin, said to media, “These have no external
ramifications, the recent decisions taken by the Government of India and our
legislative bodies are intended to ensure that good governance is promoted,
social economic development is enhance for our people in Jammu and Kashmir
and Ladakh,”
“India remains committed to ensure that the situation in J&K remains calm
and peaceful,” he said.
Some Indians were also attacked by Pakistani protestors when they were
celebrating the Independence Day outside the Indian
Embassy in London on 15 August.
India has clarified to the international community that any decision
regarding Jammu and Kashmir is its internal matter.
The government of India has removed the special status of Jammu and Kashmir,
and has divided the state into two Union Territories — Jammu and
Kashmir, and Ladakh. Most of the world countries have shown support
for India’s right to take such a decision.
Pakistan has been raking up the issue and has taken several steps to show its
protest like stopping the Samjhauta Express and trade with
India, banning Indian ads and movies, expelling the Indian High
Commissioner, the downgrade of diplomatic ties with India.
