Heavy rains and floods were reported in northern Karnataka and parts of
Maharashtra. State governments have issued an alert in many parts of both the
states, and asked people to be on the vigil. Almost 2 lakh
people have been evacuated and sent to relief camps in both the states.

Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa has agreed to
release five lakh cusecs of water from the Almatti Dam. He
even visited parts of the state including Belagavi which was affected by
intense rain and floods.

In view of excessive rainfall leading to water-logged roads in parts of
Maharashtra, Railways is running a special train between Miraj and Karad.
Railways has also dispatched essential items like groceries & medicines
to the flood-affected areas of Belagavi in Karnataka-Piyush Goyal,
Union Minister of Railways and Commerce.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis took an aerial
survey of the flood situation at places like Kolhapur, Satara and Sangli. He
has asked officials to provide speedy relief to all the people who are
affected. Mumbai has been one of the worst hit cities with rains lashing
across city and its suburbs and bringing normal life to a standstill.

“Just how massive are #maharashtrafloods? Kolhapur is around 120 kms from
Belgaum. The rivers in the areas of western Maharashtra, South Konkan, Goa
& North Karnataka witnessed heavy floods in past few days. North Konkan
& Vidarbha recieved heavy rains too”, tweeted Journalist
Janhavee Moole.

“North Karnataka is drowning in floods..lakhs have lost their
homes, properties, cattle. Many are in need of food, shelter, basic needs. Many
villages evacuated. People are moving to relief centers. Please extend your
helping hands”, tweeted Vinut Mathapati.

Many rivers across Andhra Pradesh are currently over-flowing creating a flood
scare in nearby areas.

Reportedly, heavy rain have lashed across Kerala killing over nine
people
on Thursday in various rain-related incidents. Last year,
during August, the state was gripped by intense floods which killed hundreds
of people. But the government has asked not to panic, instead take safety
precautionary measures. Kerala chief Minister Pinarayi
Vijayan
called for a meeting with higher officials to discuss on how
to take precautionary measures. Ten teams of NDRF have been requested to be
deployed in Kerala.
