Para-athlete Deepa Malik is one of the sporting talent of
India who have been nominated for the highest sporting honour, the
prestigious Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna awards.
Wrestler Bajrang Punia has also been nominated for the Khel
Ratna while cricketer Ravindra Jadeja is among the 19
sportspersons who have been nominated for Arjuna Award.
Some of the other names are Poonam Yadav, athlete
Tejinder Pal Singh Toor, Mohammed Anas and Swapna
Barman, footballer Gurpreet Singh Sandhu, hockey
player Chinglensana Singh Kangujam and shooter Anjum
Moudgil.
The nomination process is carried out by a 12-member award selection
committee and the list was announced yesterday.
Para-Olympics silver medalist Deepa Malik has been conferred the
Padma Shri and Arjuna award for her
contribution to para sports. She is the first Indian woman to win a medal at
the Paralympic Games and has won a grand total of 58 national and 23
international medals.
Wrestler Bajrang Punia recently won the gold medal by defeating Iran’s
Peiman Bibyani in the 65kg final of the men’s free style
competition and had earlier won the Asian Wrestling
Championships in Xi’an, China. He holds the number
one rank in the world in the 65 kg category.
Apart from an excellent performance in respective sports the other parameters
that are considered for the awards are leadership qualities, sportsmanship
and a sense of discipline.
Three coaches have been nominated for the Dronacharya Award
in regular category and three for the Dronacharya Award in lifetime category.
