Abhinandan Varthaman to get Vir Chakra on Independence Day

Indian Air force Commander Abhinandan Varthaman, who shot
down a Pakistani F-16 jet, will be awarded Vir Chakra on
Independence Day. During the attack, his aircraft crashed on Pakistani soil
after which their troops held him captive for over sixty hours before handing
him back to India. Varthaman’s bravery along with a calm and composed manner
in which he responded to Pakistan military was much appreciated.

Varthaman, who was working with the Mig-21 squadron in Srinagar, was caught
by Pakistan military on 27 February after his Mig-21 Bison Fighter jet crash
landed on Pakistani soil. The next couple of days were filled with anxiety as
to whether Pakistan will let him return back to India. But Varthaman was
handed over to India on 1 March.

Vir Chakra is India’s third highest war time gallantry medal
given to a person. Social media was flooded with congratulatory messages for
Varthaman.

Vir Chakra to be given on Independence Day. Your calm in face of a crisis is
a story worth textbooks. Proud of you officer!!!”, tweeted All India
Mahila Congress.

“Congratulations to real hero Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman for Vir
Chakra”, tweeted Pragati Devkat.
