After months of speculation, the Congress party has decided to choose
Sonia Gandhi as their next president. On Saturday evening,
Congress Working Committee (CWC) met for a high-level
meeting which lasted for many hours, and the crucial decision was made by
around 11 pm. The focus was mainly on who will become the next chief, but
matters relating to the ongoing issues at Jammu and Kashmir after scrapping
of Article 370 was also discussed. Initially, there were reports that the
Gandhi’s are reluctant to step up as the party chief and will not interfere
in the selection process either.
Regretfully, Rahul Gandhi ji (@rahulGandhi) has stuck to his decision to
resign but it is an honour to have Smt Sonia Gandhi ji (@iamsoniagandhi)
once again as our party president. I look forward to working under their

Earlier, Sonia Gandhi was the chief of the party before handing over the
position to her son Rahul Gandhi, who had clearly stated
that he is going to discontinue in the position. Sonia had headed the party
for almost two decades.
All the top leaders of the party including Priyanka Gandhi, AK
Antony, KC Venugopal and Manmohan Singh were present for the meet.
In the last Lok Sabha elections, Congress party had faced heavy defeat. There
was widespread criticism against the Gandhi’s after the defeat. According
to reports, the members might pick up a new leader once the party becomes
stable later this year.
